Streaming Tool Evaluation
The first iteration of the eSDO
StreamingTool prototype was released on 14 July 2006 as a java webstart application. The streaming tool can be launched from
http://msslxx.mssl.ucl.ac.uk:8080/esdo/visualization/jnlp/esdo_streamingtool.jnlp
. The tool has been demonstrated formally and informally during July, August and September 2006. The following feedback was obtained at an eSDO coronal wave community meeting, SOHO-18, and the HELAS Roadmap workshop. These feature requests and bugs will guide development over the remaining 12 months of eSDO project time.
Functionality
1st Iteration: July 2006
- Java webstart application
- AstroGrid integration: PLASTIC-enabled to view image data located through HelioScope
- Spatial pan and zoom enabled
2nd Iteration: December 2006
- Temporal pan and zoom: step forward, step back, forward movie mode, rewind movie mode
- Save static images as GIFs or JPEGs
- Save image series as IDL datacube or movie (MPEG or animated GIF)
Feedback
Usability
- Temporal pan should use "grab and drag" (similar to Google maps) instead of direction arrows
- Streaming tool java webstart does not work on Macs
- Simple java class reads FITS file image data, so solar images do not have colour, and in the case of MDI magnetograms, no gaussian min / max to show magnetic differences
Suggested Functionality
- Add coronal wave analysis: FFT? Display power spectrum?
- Overlay multiple wavelengths? Display different wavelengths as a collage?
- Add eSDO algorithms: show coronal loops? show small events? show CME dimming regions?
