SDO Streaming Tool Design

The SDO streaming tool will allow users to view AIA and HMI images through a web-based GUI. Initially users will be able to pan and zoom spatially, but further development will implement functionality to play images in “movie mode”. A prototype allowing spatial panning and zooming will be prepared for mid-summer 2006; after evaluation, further development will enhance the tool by adding the movie mode and the ability to stream images from multiple caches.

Prototype

A web-based prototype allowing spatial panning and zooming of images from a single cache will be developed by 31 June 2006.

Questions

  1. Solar rotation - should a series of images be derotated always, never, or at the user's discretion? Should derotation be to the initial image, to a set time every day (00:00 GMT?), or to a time designated by the user?
  2. Coordinate axes - should images be displayed with coordinate axes? Is SDO using heliocentric, instrument specific X and Y, or other coordinate system? Should the user have a choice of coordinate systems?
  3. Spatial panning - the user will be able to pan by clicking on eight arrows at cardinal and intercardinal points around the image. Should the user be able to pan by clicking within the image? If so, should the image centralize on the centre of the tile clicked by the user, or should it centralize on the exact coordinates clicked on by the user? Should the user be able to enter coordinates into a text box to load an image centralized to that point?
  4. Metadata How much metadata should be displayed to the user, particular as the image is panned or zoomed?
    • Data / time / coordinates?
    • Intensity?
    • Filename and instrument?
    • All or subset of keywords from matching file?
  5. Prototype Image Saves - should the user be able to save a view of the streaming tool? If so, format of GIF, JPEG, FITS?
  6. Streaming tool state - is statefulness required for the prototype (spatial pan / zoom only)? What about later functionality in movie mode?
  7. GUI implementation - JSP? Java applet? Javascript / DHTML? Other?

Functionality

  1. Access through web-based GUI

  3. Tiling functionality allows spatial panning
  4. Multi-resolution functionality allows spatial zooming
  5. Movie mode will allow users to define start time, stop time and image cadence
