Streaming Tool


The eSDO Streaming Tool provides spatial and temporal visualization of the Sun using FITS files accessed as URLs. The rapid prototype of this visualization application can load files sourced through the AstroGrid Helioscope tool and allow the user to zoom in and spatially pan around the image. The next iteration of the tool will incorporate "movie mode" facilities such as play, rewind, step forward and step back. In addition, the UK coronal seismology community has expressed interest in developing quicklook wavelet and FFT analysis techniques for AIA and HMI files viewed through the Streaming Tool. The Streaming Tool can be launched as a Java Webstart file from http://msslxx.mssl.ucl.ac.uk:8080/esdo/visualization/jnlp/esdo_streamingtool.jnlp.   1. Launch the AstroGrid Client Runtime tool (ACR).
  2. Start Helioscope from the ACR.
  3. Enter start and stop times, ensure "Graphics" is ticked, and press "Search". Once Helioscope locates available STAP services matching search times, click on an instrument name to find FITS files by time.
  4. Launch the Image Gallery tool.
  5. Press "Register".
  6. In Helioscope, "View images in ESDO Streaming Tool" will appear. Double click on one FITS file, and then click "View images in ESDO Streaming Tool" once.
  7. Once the new file is displayed in the Streaming Tool, press the "Zoom in" / "Zoom out" buttons to vary the spatial detail of the image, and click the arrows around the image to pan spatially.

Future Enhancements

  • Direct start time / stop time query to STAP service as an alternative to locating files through Helioscope.
  • Standard pre-processing for SDO files (such as colour addition) before image is displayed.
  • Movie mode facilities: play, rewind, pause, step forward, step back.
  • Ability to save static images as JPEGs and image series as MPEGs or data cubes.
  • Optional: addition of grid lines and coordinate information on thumbnails.
  • Suggested: quicklook FFT or wavelet analysis function
  • Suggested: ability to drag box over area of interest for further analysis
  • Suggested: view multiple AIA filters and HMI images simultaneously as overlays or gallery.
