UK Permanent Tape Store

One option for the UK eSDO data centre is to permanently store certain AIA and HMI products in the Atlas Petabyte storage facility at RAL. The following figures provide early estimates of storage requirements for different SDO products sampled at different rates. These estimates assume that users will access series of these data products as MPEG movies. Viewing MPEGs will allow users to visualize evolving solar activity over long time periods, and the movies will help researchers identify the time ranges for which they may wish to download full datasets of level 0 and level 1 SDO products. Other visualization techniques may be more appropriate for certain high level products, particularly as MPEG is a lossy storage format that stores deltas between successive frames rather than all frame data. Therefore, storage requirements will change if users wish to access high level AIA or HMI products in a format suitable for scientific research.

These figures were extrapolated from full disk TRACE movies generated with the Berkeley MPEG encoder from an hourly TRACE tri* file.
