PPARC Panel Meeting

  • Project risk management plan now available at RiskPolicyAndPlan. Please edit / comment.
  • Deb Miller has asked for a list of planned eSDO algorithms along with specific strategies for managing delays, risks, development termination, etc. once feedback from the February AIA / HMI meeting is available. Current list:
    • General and asymmetrical mode parameter analysis
    • Local helioseismology inversion
    • Subsurface flow analysis
    • Perturbation map generation
    • Coronal loop detection
    • Non-linear force-free magnetic field extrapolation with helicity computation
    • Small event detection
    • Coronal dimming region recognition
  • The DEM algorithm is likely to be dropped from the eSDO development schedule after the AIA / HMI meeting in light of PPARC panel feedback. Collaborators at Lockheed have indicated interest in an eSDO effort to speed up existing DEM algorithms from US teams, but effort will instead be concentrated on the RAL small event and coronal dimming region recognition algorithms.
  • The movie maker visualization tool will include a routine to generate a data cube and evaluate it for the appropriateness of wavelet analysis. (Note: it will not actually perform the wavelet analysis.)


  • Algorithms: Mike, Sergei, Thierry and Vito gave an overview of continued progress of solar algorithms.
  • Data Centres: Elizabeth presented slides showing the Solar-B / eSDO data access prototype, showing functionality of a UK data centre using MySQL and AstroGrid DSA at MSSL with remote storage at the RAL ATLAS facility. More information at SolarBaccess.
  • Visualization tools: the thumbnail extraction / labelling tool should be finished by 31 March 2006. Prototype development of the SDO streaming tool will begin after the AIA / HMI meeting. The movie maker tool will now include data cube generation and evaluation of wavelet analysis.

eSDO Travel Information

Flights, hotel, 2 rental cars and conference fees have already been paid for EA, LC, VG, MS, MT, TT and SZ. The conference fee includes all breakfasts / lunches during the conference plus dinner on Thursday Feb 16. Please keep receipts for all other meals to claim on the MSSL foreign travel form

Future 2006 Solar Meetings

  • UK Solar Missions: ElizabethAuden will give an overview talk of eSDO at 9:30 on February 24
  • MIST: An email from Neil Arnold has indicated that abstract submission and a draft agenda will be available in early March
  • eSDO: the next consortium meeting shall be hosted at RAL. Date TBD.

Phase B Technical Information


CVS is now available at MSSL, and all developers should upload developed and legacy code regularly. . Elizabeth will write a wiki tutorial page showing an example of uploading code into CVS. See more information at AccessToCVS and EclipseCVS.

C code

All code must be converted to C in accordance with the eSDO coding standard, unit tested and placed in CVS by 30 June 2006. See more information at CCodingStandard.

Unit Testing

The CuTest package shall be used for eSDO unit tests. Each function must contain at least one test. Tests for individual algorithms or tools will be placed in a file called, for example, ‘HelicityCuTest.c’ or ‘MovieMakerCuTest.c’. All CuTest.c files shall be added to AllAlgorithmTests.c, and all visualization tool CuTest.c files shall be added to AllVisualizationTests.c.

Unit tests should be written as developers write new C code or convert legacy code into C. Integration tests will be written during the scientific testing phase after 30 June 2006. See more information at CuTest.
